Yoga can keep ANYONE , including "Tough Guys" fit,
...anywhere, any time here's how.
Yoga is amazing.
It fits very well with the fast physical fitness idea of efficient benefits for time invested because it can be done at home with little or no equipment.
It's also accessible to people of ANY fitness level from newbies to trained athletes. I've personally witnessed, and experienced the tough bodybuilder guy (aka me:-?) quivering and toppling from a posture while tiny slim women a fraction their / my size held the same posture with grace and poise for an extended time. Any tough guy who thinks he's “beyond” Yoga hasn't found the postures that will benefit him, once he's capable of doing them;-)
Finally, I believe the claims that it extends your life, and therefore gives you time back that's invested in doing it's exercises, breathing and postures.
It's history is mysterious and ancient, perhaps as much as 5310 years old (3300 B.C.E.) according to some sources but sources dating around 800 to 100 B.C.E. Make direct reference to Yoga. In short it's DAMN OLD, at least 2100 years old, still around, and thriving.
There is scientifically documented cases of practitioners doing things that western science and medicine thought impossible, like stopping and restarting their hearts, Tibetan monks drying sheets of ice water on their naked bodies using yogic techniques, and incredible feats of strength like breaking chains by guys that look like they'd break in a stiff wind. I don't think anyone is here to learn that stuff, and I couldn't teach it if you were:-)- The point is Yogis have a level of control over their bodies that borders on unbelievable.
- massages your organs - improves organ health - extends your life
If it were any other form of fitness I'd be much more skeptical, but Yoga has had thousands of years to get it right. I won't even attempt to support all it's claims, but I will tell you the benefits I have personally experienced:
- increased body awareness - better posture - improved flexibility - increased range of motion
This page is not intended to be instructional like most of the others because I'm not qualified to teach it, I'm an amateur at best. I've included these pages on this site because I would feel irresponsible leaving them out. It's such a complete system with such depth and breadth regarding health and fitness that I felt compelled to include them. Since I can't teach it, I will simply inform you about it, and it's connections with health, fitness and it's related pages including prevention, wellness, balance, healthy living
, and a bunch of other topics that connect well with both mental and physical fitness and wellness.
I have never met my teachers, and only occasionally communicated to them a couple of times with email. Why? simple they where free and accessible via the internet while I stood ready to learn in my living room, then on the outskirts of Seoul South Korea;-) The site has changed somewhat over time but you can still access excellent free streaming classes at
YogaToday.com
I would recommend this site as a great way to try it for free. My own long term fitness plan is to reintroduce it back into my regular routine. I removed it from my own fitness program because, my super intense workouts made adding it in more like over training than training. My personal long term fitness program will include yoga again once I get my body composition back where I want it.
I would also highly recommend finding a good teacher if you want to improve more quickly. Studios usually have more skilled and knowledgeable teachers, but you could probably attend a free classes at your gym. Choose someone YOU like and you will progress much faster than learning on your own.
